This is a term used by NIH for projects where multiple PIs are proposed. The "contact PI" is the one PI designated for all communication between the PIs and the agency. The contact PI must meet all eligibility requirements for PI status in the same way as other PIs, but has no special roles or responsibilities within the project team beyond those mentioned above.
